Ever notice how everyone seems to nap on Thanksgiving day? You’re with your favorite people, yet you just can’t keep your eyes open.
Here’s the reason why (and it’s food-science related):
According to the consumer website http://www.eatturkey.com,
Like many protein foods, turkey contains the essential amino acid tryptophan. Tryptophan is used to produce the B-vitamin, niacin, which is used to produce serotonin, a neurotransmitter that exerts a calming effect and regulates sleep. But it’s not the only food that contains a large amount of tryptophan. Check this out:
There are other protein foods that contain a larger amount of tryptophan:
100 grams of roasted turkey contains .333 grams of tryptophan
100 grams of Swiss cheese contains .401 grams of tryptophan
100 grams of roasted pork loin contains .341 grams of tryptophan
And even with all that tryptophan, it’s actually more likely that the large meal (with tons of carbohydrates - think of the bread, mashed potatoes, sweet potatoes, etc.) that lead to after-dinner fatigue.
Pretty cool, huh? Happy Thanksgiving!
