It’s planting time again! I bet many of you (well, those involved with production agriculture) are in the fields, planting seeds that will take root and become an important agricultural commodity in what seems like no time. I grew up in a county that raises primarily cotton, and there’s nothing more exciting to me than seeing the tractors back in the fields each spring, gearing up (pardon the pun!) for another season.
Some FFA chapters, particularly those in rural areas, are involved in growing crops as a group. One in particular, the Southeast Polk FFA in Iowa, is not only growing crops this year, but they are testing different soybean seed varieties in a trial. The members are planting seed varieties from several seed companies to find out the differences, test the growth speeds and patterns, and most of all, get hands-on experience in how a soybean plant progresses throughout the season. They are relying on expertise from local agronomists, seed companies and their agriculture teachers.
