Eagleville, Tenn. FFA Chapter Changes the Game for School Produce

Hydroponic lettuce

Many chapters have horticulture programs that highlight the ins and outs of plant systems. However members of the Eagleville FFA chapter in Eagleville, TN are taking things in a different direction.

In addition to traditionally growing flowers, mums, and pumpkins for fundraisers, they have also adopted a new hydroponics system in their greenhouse, in order to allow a steady flow of produce throughout the year. The hydroponics system was recently built by several members, who wish to begin providing the fresh produce for the school cafeteria.

The fruits and vegetables expected to begin in the hydroponic system are various types of strawberries, lettuce, and cabbage. The students are hoping to have a full operation running by the summer of 2013, in which their produce will be donated to the local food bank until the beginning of school.
